Discover a white lacquered desk grounded in solid ash

Two materials, clearly separated: a desk top in MDF finished with a white lacquer, carried on legs in solid ash wood. The contrast is the point. White reflects light across the 120 x 60 cm surface and keeps a small study from feeling heavy, whilst the pale ash frame stops the piece looking clinical the way an all-white desk can. It is a straightforward Japandi combination of Scandinavian brightness and Japanese restraint, and it suits bedrooms and open-plan corners where a dark timber desk would sit like a block.

Building the top from lacquered MDF rather than solid board is a deliberate choice. Engineered panel stays flat across its width and does not shrink or cup with the seasons, which matters when a surface is this broad and this pale; movement in solid timber shows at the joints, and white finishes are unforgiving. The lacquer itself is a sealed film, so the white desk top resists marking and cleans back with a damp cloth, whilst the solid ash legs take the structural work where real timber earns its place.

Soft-close drawers, floor protection and everyday upkeep

The desk includes two drawers with a soft close mechanism, so they pull out fully and draw themselves shut over the last few centimetres rather than slamming. That is quiet enough to use in a bedroom whilst someone else sleeps, and kinder to whatever is stored inside. Beneath the ash legs sit felt protectors, fitted to care for your floor and prevent scratches; check them occasionally, as felt collects grit that turns a protector into an abrasive on timber and vinyl alike.

A lacquered finish is specified for easier maintenance, and it lives up to that. Warm water, a little soap and a soft cloth handle ink, coffee and hand marks, though abrasive creams and scouring pads will dull the sheen and should stay in the cupboard. The solid ash legs need nothing more than a dry cloth. Position the white desk where daylight falls across rather than directly onto the top, and pair it with a woven chair and one warm lamp.
