Explore a handleless oak veneer TV stand two metres wide

The most striking thing about this unit is what it lacks. There are no handles: the 2 doors and 2 drawers run on hidden guides with a push to open mechanism, so the front is an uninterrupted plane of oak veneer broken only by the shadow lines between panels. That is a specifically Japandi decision, since the grain of the oak becomes the only decoration, and at 200 x 44 cm there is a great deal of it to look at. Press any panel and it springs open; press it closed and the front disappears again.

Splitting the storage between doors and drawers is more useful than it first appears. Drawers suit the small things that otherwise migrate around a living room, such as remotes, cables and adapters, whilst the cupboards behind the doors take the tall, awkward boxes. Hidden guides keep the drawer sides clean and let the fronts sit flush with the cabinet. Adjustable legs guarantee stability, which on a unit this long is not a luxury: two metres of furniture will find any dip in a floor.

Living with a push-to-open front takes one adjustment: fingers leave marks on a handleless panel, so keep a dry cloth nearby and wipe along the grain. Beyond that it is straightforward. Give the long TV cabinet a wall it can own, ideally with the screen centred above it, and let the width do the work, since a low horizontal piece makes a room read as calmer and wider than it is. Check the leg adjusters again a few weeks after assembly, once the floor has settled under the load.
