Embrace the Slatted Dark Ash Bedside Table

The detail that defines this bedside table made of ash veneer with a dark finish is its pair of sliding doors made of wooden slats. Slats sit somewhere between an open shelf and a closed cupboard: they break up what is behind them without hiding it completely, so the interior reads as texture rather than as clutter. Sliding them one way or the other lets you decide, day to day, which half of the 50 by 55 cm piece is on show and which is put away, and neither door ever swings out into the space beside the bed.

The dark finish on ash keeps the strong linear grain visible whilst deepening the tone, and against pale bedding that contrast is what gives the piece its presence in an otherwise quiet room. Slatted fronts also cast a fine shadow line across the face, which changes through the day as the light moves. Adjustable legs allow the table to be levelled, and on a sliding-door piece that adjustment is what keeps the doors running freely rather than catching.

Construction and Everyday Practicalities

The body is built from E0 manufactured wood, a classification for panels with very low formaldehyde emissions, which is a meaningful choice for furniture that spends its life a metre from your head in a room with the door and windows shut for eight hours a night. It is an exclusive design created by the Kave Home team, and the slat proportion, spacing and door width are drawn as a set rather than assembled from stock components.

In use, run a dry cloth or a soft brush along the slats now and then, since narrow gaps collect dust faster than a flat front and a damp cloth will simply push it into the joints. Keep the top dry and use a coaster; a dark veneer finish shows a water ring clearly. If a door starts to feel stiff, check the levelling before anything else, as a floor that has settled slightly since delivery is the usual cause. The piece also works beyond the bedroom, as a low unit beside a chair.
